A Story to Tell: The Old Woman, Young Person, and Starfish on the Beach
BLOG: A Story to Tell: The Old Woman, Young Person, and Starfish on the Beach
It's a serene morning on her favorite, serene beach, the sun rising on the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow. Along that beach walks a wise old woman, her steps marked by a lifetime of stories etched in the lines of her face. She's been walking this shore for years, but today is different.
As she strolls along the water's edge, she notices a young person ahead, eagerly picking up starfish and gently tossing them into the glistening sea.
The old woman approaches and, with a kind smile, inquires about the purpose of this seemingly repetitive task.
The young person grins, "I'm saving the starfish. They washed ashore, and I want to return them to the ocean, where they belong. I know that if I don't, the morning sun will dry them up."
The wise old woman gazes out at the countless starfish that still await rescue and nods in understanding. Then, she turns to the young person and says, "It's a noble effort, my friend. But do you not see? The beach stretches as far as the eye can see, and there are so many starfish. How can your small actions possibly make a difference in the grand scheme of things?"
The young person pauses, looking at the starfish in their hand, and and tosses it gently into the waves that roll as if to welcome the starfish home. With a smile like the morning rays, the young person says, "It means everything to that one." The wise old woman smiled, nodded and knew she met quite the young person that morning as they continued their morning walks.
